Intellectual property lawyer, patent agent and trademark agent

I advise businesses on protecting, using and enforcing intellectual property. Based in Toronto, I work with Canadian companies, international businesses, and lawyers and agents seeking Canadian IP counsel.

I have practised exclusively in intellectual property law since 2006. I hold an LL.B. and an Honours B.Sc. in Computer Science from Western University. Before joining Dickinson Wright, I practised at IP boutiques and national law firms and managed my own intellectual property firm.

Technical understanding and commercial context

My work includes patent drafting and prosecution, trademark clearance and registration, industrial designs, licensing, ownership issues and IP due diligence. My technical background is particularly useful when working with software businesses, inventors and engineering teams.

The question is what protection would matter to the business, where it is needed, and how it fits with product development, financing, licensing and competition.

Disputes, trials and appeals

I have acted in patent, trademark, copyright, domain name and software licensing disputes. My experience includes trial and appellate work and advising businesses on both asserting rights and responding to infringement allegations.

That perspective also informs non-contentious work: the wording of a patent claim, the scope of a trademark application and the ownership provisions of an agreement may matter long after the initial filing or transaction.

Working with other counsel

I assist foreign counsel with Canadian matters and accept referrals from lawyers and agents. The scope of my involvement, reporting arrangements and communications with the client can be agreed at the outset.
