Peter Elyjiw

Peter is a lawyer, patent agent and trademark agent based in Toronto. Prior to joining Chumak & Company LLP, Peter obtained over fourteen years of experience in intellectual property law from a leading national boutique intellectual property law firm.

Peter’s practice is primarily focused upon high-technology and mechanical patent drafting, prosecution and portfolio management. He has worked with a wide range of technologies, including smartphones, industrial machinery, medical imaging systems, peer-to-peer networking, and video processing.

Peter has extensive experience with guiding patent applications through to issuance before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, including applications that have been objected to on the grounds of subject matter eligibility for purportedly being directed to business methods. He is also intimately familiar with the U.S. patent system and with managing the global prosecution of patent portfolios across multiple jurisdictions including Europe.

Patent applicants seek out Peter for his attention to detail and his sensitivity to the bottom line.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Peter worked in industry as a software engineer for approximately five years. As a result, he has a rapport with engineers and inventors that fosters a deep understanding of their technology, which in turn promotes the acquisition of strong patents.

Peter also provides patentability, validity and infringement opinions and freedom-to-operate opinions.

While attending law school at the University of Toronto, Peter won the Bereskin & Parr Prize for having the highest standing in courses concerned with intellectual property.

Peter is also a registered Canadian trademark agent.
